Luckily the Emigrant Wilderness looked like a relatively smokeless/fireless option, and there was no quota for permits to hike the Gem Lake Loop, so I filled out the permit application online and off we went.

The lake itself has many excellent camping spots, and while there were a couple of other parties at the lake on Sunday night, they were completely out of sight and earshot. I bumped into someone back at my car who had gone to relief reservoir instead of taking a left to Kennedy lake at the fork in the trail (which is in a few miles, marked signs) - they said the reservoir was really nice and no bog, so I kinda wish I had gone there instead. Like Yosemite, it has towering granite mountains and spectacular alpine lakes. The area must be in a flight path because I heard commercial jets overhead about hourly or so, not bothersome just an observation. Secret lake is unbelievable - perfect swimming temperature in July! Daytime temperatures can climb into the upper 80s while nighttime temperatures can drop below 30 degrees. The last bit is a bit muddy and hard to find the trail, but its rewarding to walk through the meadows and reach the lake. Short, easy hike.
